The starting point for my line-ups is always the situation in the first fifteen minutes. In some matches there are later tactical changes, which had a lot of influence. Like in the legendary 1966 World Championship final. England started with a traditional 4-4-2 with Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton in central midfield. From the 20th minute, Stiles became a controlling midfielder for the defense and Charlton a true number ten. His guard Beckenbauer was therefore pushed back more, so that he was less able to make his feared rushes. Coach Alf Ramsey in this way was ahead of his time.

Thank you Wolf, for your interest in my website. I base my formations as much as possible on footage, sometimes supplemented with information from historical newspapers, books and websites. From 1954 videos of all World Cup finals can be seen and of club finals from the early 60's.

At the 1974 World Cup final almost all sources indeed mention Vogts as right back, while he had to shadow Cruyff, who sometimes also made rushes on the left. Schwarzenbeck then went more to the center. In the basic formation however, Vogts is a stopper next to Beckenbauer, who mainly played central left.

Great piece of work - the tactical lineups are always highly interesting, especially those from many years ago.  

 Do you arrive at the historical lineups by watching footage or is it based on newspaper reports? Just curious. They are always on-spot on your website. For example, the 1974 World Cup final you correctly list Schwarzenbeck in the right back position (normally he was the stopper) and Vogts as the stopper (normally he was the right back). That's the kind of accuracy I always look for.

Thank you for your reaction. I’m afraid that Line Up Builder indeed is down. I’ve asked them on their Facebook page, but they didn’t react. On my website for the last three European finals I had to use Build Lineup.

  Great page! Just a tiny remark: Messi played very much as a deep false-nine in the 2011 UCL final. Deeper than both wingers.
